Holiday Helper tournament, 16 December 2006

30 players from 4dan to 35k, showed up to participate. Chuck Robbins and Chris Sira directed the tournament. Winners:

Pumpkin Classic tournament, 28 October 2006

A record 52 players, some from as far away as Pittsburg and RTP, were on hand for the annual scramble for pumpkins and gourds at NOVA-GMU. In spite of a computer crash, all four rounds finished relatively on time! Seven players 5 D and above clashed in the top section. Local sensei Yuan Zhou was upset not just once, but twice, by Daniel Chou and Keith Arnold. The winners were:

Congress Tune-Up tournament, 22 July 2006

Forty-one players participated in the NOVA Congress Tune-up tournament on Saturday, 22 July. Of these, four pairs played in the pair go section for two rounds, then joined the main tournament. Our longest distance visitor was Mehnet Bersbey, from Turkey! The winners were:
 
Pair GO:First place, Keiju and YukinoTakehara, combined rank of 13 K, upsetting the 1 D team of Trevor Morris and Karen Gold in the final game!

May Madness tournament, 20 May 2006.

Thirty-two players came to the May Madness. Everyone brought a mystery prize, so everyone went home with a prize!

Cherry Blossom tournament, 25 March 2006

Eighty-two players participated in the NOVA Cherry Blossom 2006 tournament, at the Sumner School in Washington DC. Two came all the way from Japan: Tadashi Kohmoto, 6 D, and Susumu Hyodo, 4 D. We hope that this is the beginning of an ongoing exchange with our Japanese friends. Players from Rochester, NY, North Carolina, and Ohio also made the trip! The winners were:

Valentine’s Au Pair Pair tournament, 18 Feb 2006:

 

The first NOVA Valentine's Au Pair Pair Go Tournament was held on Saturday, 18 Feb 2006, at the George Mason Law School in Arlington VA. Eleven pairs participated, exceeding the wildest expectations of the director.

After two rounds, the winners (2-0) were:

Mike LePore (2 D) and Quynh Vo (17 K), playing as a 7 K team, and Keiju Takehara (12 K) and Yukino Takehara (26 K), playing as an 18 K team.

The other teams were: Ed Kao (6 D) and Fonda Chan (16 K), playing as a 4 K team; Hal Small
(3 D) and Betsy Small (13 K), playing as a 4 K team; Jim Pickett (5 K) and Louise Ingram (8 K), playing as a 5 K team; Scott Waldron (1 D) and Jennifer Lin (19 K), playing as an 8 K team; Trevor Morris (6 D) and Abby Morris (35 K), playing as a 14 K team; Keith Arnold (5 D) and Melanie Arnold (35 K), playing as a 14 K team; Todd Blatt (5 K) and Melanie Blatt (26 K), playing as a 14 K team; Eric Hittinger (12 K) and Rachel Hittinger (28 K), playing as a 19 K team; and Todd Sprang (18 K) and Stephanie Xu (28 K), playing as a 22 K team.

Each team which won one game received a second place prize. We agreed to hold our second pair tournament in July, as part of our Congress Tune-Up Tournament.

Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Handicap Tournament, 18 Feb 2006:

Nineteen players participated, later joined by four of the pair go players. The winners were:

First place - Eric Lui (8 D), 4-0; John Porvaznik (23 K), 4-0; Seong-Min Lee (28 K), 4-0; Bob Ehrlich (7 K), 3-0; and Kevin Chin (16 K), 2-2

Second place - Ken Koester (2 D), 2-1, Melody Chao (35 K), 2-1; John Lancaster (5 K), 2-2; Raymond Yeh (6 K), 2-2; Paul Blackburn (7 K), 2-2; and Tienren Tan (12 K), 2-2.
